Vegan food in Bushwick

Vegan food in Bushwick

There was a time when members of the vegan lifestyle had to settle for French fries or a sad "garden" salad when visiting restaurants. However, since veganism became part of the mainstream in 2019, this era is long gone. Bushwick is thriving with a ton of new vegan businesses, so if you're living in the Bushwick coliving area, check out the following spots.

Here's a list of our 12 favorite places to enjoy delicious vegan cuisine.

Amituofo Vegan Cuisine

This cozy vegan Bushwick spot, located at the intersection of Bogart and Cook Streets, is definitely worth checking out. The interior easily combines elements of rustic and minimalist styles, creating an ideal setting for a romantic date and gatherings with friends. The menu offers a variety of Pan-Asian dishes, from crispy king oyster mushrooms in the batter to General Tso's chicken, Thai dishes, and vegetable salad rolls. They also offer fusion combinations like kimchi fries, as well as light takes on classic American dishes, including their Beyond Burger. Bring your curious vegans and doubters and watch them happily demolish their plates.

Brooklyn Whiskers

With their fresh digs located just three blocks from their original location, now is a great time to indulge in a classic and try Bushwick's vegan food. For example, try their famous smoky maple tofu sandwich and a variety of vegan baked goods. Their new location features a spacious kitchen dedicated exclusively to baking, promising even more cakes and cookies. If you live in Coliving in NYC and have the opportunity, then visit this place. The varied menu also includes several innovations. We recommend trying the new Tofu Scramble with Black Bean and Chipotle or enjoying new additions like the Southern-Style Carolina Sandwich or the Pesto Mutt with Cheezehound Mozzarella.

Bombay Kitchen

Check out the small vegan restaurant Bushwick BYOB, hidden between an elementary school and a church, making it easy to pass by. Bring a bottle of pale ale or plum red wine to enjoy their delicious oriental cuisine. It is recommended to order Gobi Manchurian-fried cauliflower in a sweet and spicy sauce, served with rice and samosas. However, be careful: some dishes add ghee or dairy products. Also, don't forget to bring cash with you. If you live in a coliving space and want to spend time in an interesting place, then Bombay Kitchen is what you need.

Champ's Diner

It's impossible to get around the topic of vegan food in Brooklyn Bushwick without mentioning Champs, a 70s-style establishment with almost a decade of history that serves classic vegan dishes, from Grand Slam breakfasts like the All Vegan Slam with tofu, soy sauce, pancakes, toast and your choice of seitan or tempeh, to pancakes, burgers, and milkshakes. This place truly has it all. Prepare to expect, but also prepare to leave completely satisfied.

Bunna Cafe

This Ethiopian cafe is imbued with an atmosphere of taste and impressions that you want to share. Their entire range is based on plant-based ingredients, although not all dishes are vegan. Forget about your cutlery and simply enjoy the richness of flavors and aromas they offer in a feast of spices, beans, and steamed vegetables artfully placed on injera. Injera is a large, spongy sourdough flatbread that resembles a light crepe covering the entire plate surface. Use injera, served on the side, to enjoy a great filling. Please note that only cash is accepted.

Hartbreakers

The same passionate vegans who brought you Champs and Screamers (in Greenpoint) have expanded their contributions with the opening of Hartbreakers, a vibrant and creative addition to vegan food in Bushwick inspired by the floral-era aesthetic of the '60s. Hartbreakers opened in late September of last year and debuted its Thunderbird, a savory grilled chicken sandwich with spicy slaw, cilantro aioli, and jalapeño on a sesame seed bun (mmm). And that's just the beginning, as they also have a variety of other delicious sandwiches that are their specialty.

Pine box rock shop

The completely vegan bar is all welcome, offering a wide selection of liquors and beers to small empanadas. A special highlight is their star event, the Vegan Shop Up, which takes place every second or third Saturday of the month. Vegan Shop Up is a collection of many vegan vendors from around the city offering snacks, crafts, and more. The next pop-up event, Seitan's Helper, is scheduled for August 17th.

Tony's Pizzeria

This place is not a completely vegetarian restaurant in Bushwick, but it definitely adheres to the vegan concept with an extensive selection of vegetarian dishes from pizza to cakes and ice cream. The term "vegan" appears throughout the establishment's menu. Tony's uses Daiya cheese and offers a variety of toppings such as chicken, meatballs, and bacon to enrich your pie selection. To avoid misunderstandings, it is recommended to consult with Salvatore, the self-proclaimed vegan expert at Tony's, and available to offer advice and friendly recommendations.

Santa Salsa

Santa Salsa, translated as "holy sauce," is a Venezuelan street cafe famous for its hot dog called Perro con Todo, which was voted the best in town by the Village Voice. However, they also offer the best vegan hot dog in New York City by any standard. Sergio Barrios, owner and chef, introduces a plant-based hot dog, replacing the traditional weiner with carrots. The vegan Zanahoria dog is topped with eggplant, carrots, onions, peppers, cabbage, sprouts, and potato chips topped with ketchup, mustard, and a special green guasacaca sauce. Their Yuca Fries and Vegan Hot Dog Santa Salsa were also absurdly delicious dishes, topping the list.

Sol Sips

Featuring flexible pricing, this affordable vegan Indian food Bushwick is owned by an entrepreneurial woman and offers an extensive selection of healthy and delicious options for Bushwick locals. Chef Francesca Chaney recently unveiled her new menu, which includes French fries, stuffed plantains, and a jackfruit panini.

Toad style

Named after the kung fu martial arts that involves jumping and crawling like a frog, vegan kung fu food Bushwick Toad Style offers delicious brunches and sandwiches. Their banh mi and buffalo cauliflower should not be overlooked. But what makes them unique is the chickpea-based Burmese tofu, which is soy-free. The texture, somewhere between pancakes and an egg omelet, with a deep, warm flavor rumored to have roots in Shan cooking, provides a unique flavor experience unlike the usual vegan soy squares popular among vegans. Don't forget to try the omelet in their bun at breakfast - the experience will be indescribable.

Queen of Falafel

Queen of Falafel is a vegetarian food Bushwick of Middle Eastern cuisine that serves casual but delicious vegan options, including a falafel sandwich and a side of hummus. This is a juicy and mouth-watering offering right in the heart of Bushwick.
