Washington Heights is tucked away near the northern end of Manhattan Island. While still part of Manhattan, this neighborhood feels slightly removed from the rest of the city. If you are looking for a place that will keep you close to the action without being directly in the middle of it all, Washington Heights could check all of the right boxes.
Affordability and a little room to breathe are major selling points here. But you are far from disconnected. Just use the A and 1 trains to get downtown promptly. If you want to leave the city for a day, the George Washington Bridge heads west to New Jersey from the neighborhood. And, since Washington Heights is nestled neatly between the Hudson River and the Harlem River, lovely views and green spaces are never far away.
As far as culture, there is a lot to love when you roam these streets. There is a strong Dominican influence in this part of Manhattan. You can sample some of the local fare, enjoy community events, find live performances, and more. Life here isn't as fast-paced as it is further south on the island, but it's still vibrant and exciting in its own way.
Rents are a bit lower here than in other parts of Manhattan, but that doesn't mean they are cheap.
